Set on a beautiful, sheltered harbor and overlooked by craggy volcanic hills, Akaroa is a popular resort town on Banks Peninsula in New Zealand. The name Akaroa means “Long Harbor.” Sailors from the HMS Britomart proclaimed British sovereignty for the land in 1840, but French settlers also settled in the area that year. Milford Sound is the undisputed jewel of Fiordland National Park. Although called Milford Sound, it is more classified as a fjord. Thousands of years ago, glacial ice forged its rugged grandeur. Sheer faced granite walls soar skyward, white-plumed waterfalls tumble from valleys into glassy waters, and Mitre Peak rears more than 5,000 feet into the mist. Due to its natural beauty and cultural significance, Milford Sound has been nominated a world heritage area.
